CONTRACTORS carrying out major roadworks on one of the busiest routes in and out of Huddersfield may pay for a special shuttle bus to replace normal services.

Sections of Halifax Road will be shut for up to 13 weeks from April while gas mains are replaced by United Utilities.

Traffic will be able to get out of Huddersfield, but the road into town will be closed off in stages. It means people in Birchencliffe will be left without a bus service into town.

But, following a public meeting in the area, Clr Mehboob Khan said an alternative could be provided.

He said: “Highways are going to contact Metro and, if the cost is reasonable, the contractors will pay for a hail-and-ride shuttle bus that will take people into town.”

The bus would be likely to cover Birchington Avenue and the roads leading off it.

Clr Kahn added that it was agreed the work would take place seven days a week to finish it as quickly as possible.
