It was the scene of many a battle in Last Of The Summer Wine.

Nora clashed with Compo time after time over the gingham tablecloths and the ginger nuts.

But now one of the world’s most famous cafes is ready for another fight - to save hospital services in Huddersfield.

Sid’s Cafe, Holmfirth’s most endearing landmark, is at the forefront of the battle to save Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and the A&E.

Owner Laura Booth gladly accepted an invitation from Deborah Siswick, who is the Holme Valley Co-Ordinator for the #HandsoffHRI campaign, to use the much-loved “Last of the Summer Wine” favourite as Holmfirth’s “Command Centre”.

Volunteers have been busy popping in and out of the cafe collecting signatures for a petition to save the unit.

Many in the Holme Valley fear the long journey times they would have to endure in an emergency to get to A&E at Calderdale Royal Hospital rather than the Royal Infirmary.

Deborah said: “We have had a fantastic response in Holmfirth with full backing from every single person.

“Edinburgh Woollen Mill have offered to fundraise with a coffee morning. Holmfirth Picturedrome are putting on a big four-band evening on March 27 from 6pm with Nu Popes, The Sellouts, Dana Ali Band and 4Gotten Funk.

“There is a full campaign team out this Saturday (February 20) with members in the shops and on the streets. We are delighted to have the Co-op Supermarket on board.

“The response to our campaign and petition really has been amazing. The demolition of our hospital to pay for another hospital’s debt simply cannot be allowed.

“The distances that people would have to travel to Halifax would cause unnecessary suffering and lives to be lost, particularly at rush hour when traffic is at a standstill. Basically, two hospitals don’t fit into one.

“All of us in the Holme Valley will be supporting the big Rally/March in Huddersfield on Saturday, February 27.”

The protestors plan to meet in St George’s Square at 11.30am.
