A NEW initiative to encourage more employees to take up sign language as an extra language and skill is coming to Huddersfield.

Signs4Life UK are setting up introductory in-house courses running for a minimum of six weeks which aim to equip people in communicating and dealing with the deaf community from this month.

There are over 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK and the group are working with organisations as varied as Asda, Victim Support, the prison service, The Red Cross, Boots, care homes, Specsavers, schools, photographers, hairdressers and Butlins.

Ms Fozia Parveen, founder of Signs4Life UK, said: “Just learning a small amount of signing will help firms comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.”

The organisation is also behind campaigns to introduce sign language as a GCSE option alongside other languages like French and Spanish.
