CHILDREN from Huddersfield's Sikh Youth 2000 school have raised £500 for the British Heart Foundation.

Sikh Youth 2000 provides extra out-of-school lessons in religion, Punjabi language and music for Sikh children.

The school is based at the Shiri Guru Nanak Sikh Sangat in Prospect Street.

In September, Sikh Youth 2000 pupils and students from mainstream Kirklees Schools staged a play at Huddersfield Town Hall as part of Sikh Awareness Week.

The play was about the history of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book which is treated as a living entity.

Pupils from Westborough High School in Dewsbury and Scissett Middle School also gave a display of Indian dance at the town hall.

After the performances - which were attended by Mayor of Kirklees Clr Mary Harkin - goods donated by Bradford firm Empire Electricals were raffled off, raising £500.

Jas Sohanpal, a co-ordinator for Sikh Youth 2000, said: "We decided to give the money to the British Heart Foundation because I had a heart attack 10 years ago and I have been fundraising for them ever since."

On Saturday, Sikh Youth 2000 pupils and Mayor of Kirklees Clr Mary Harkin presented the £500 to British Heart Foundation representative Paul Nicholson.
