MEMBERS of the Sikh community in Huddersfield have called on the government to do more to intervene after two Sikhs were killed in Pakistan.

Balbir Singh Uppal, from the Huddersfield Sikh Leisure Centre, and Inderpal Singh Randhawa, of the Sikh Temple, have spoken of their concerns after two Sikhs in Pakistan were abducted by militants and beheadedlast month.

The Sikhs were kidnapped for a huge ransom of 20m rupees (£156,000) and no-one from their immediate families was in a position to meet demands.

Mr Singh Uppal said: “Sikhs have long lived in Pakistan, but they are a minority. However, Pakistan needs to treat its minorities with more respect.”

Mr Singh Randhawa handed a letter to Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman and asked him to deliver it personally to the Prime Minister, which he promised he would do.

He said: “Barry Sheerman was very supportive and said he was sad at what had happened.

“The British government has a good relationship with Pakistan and we ask of them to ask for the safety for the Sikh community there.”
