LOCAL Euro-MP Diana Wallis held a meeting with Sikh campaigners from Yorkshire.

The meeting, in Brussels, was so she could give her support to their human rights campaigns.

Ms Wallis, the Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for the region, met Yorkshire members of the Sikh Federation, as well as members of Sikh organisations throughout Europe.

It was the federation's first European Sikh Lobby Day in Brussels and several Sikhs from the region went to the European Parliament to speak to Euro-MPs.

Ms Wallis discussed several issues with the Sikhs, including their campaign to expose what they consider to be the genocide of Sikhs in 1984 and alleged widespread abuse of human rights in India.

Ms Wallis, a member of Amnesty International, said: "There is evidence of punitive treatment of Sikh political and human rights activists."
