A CHARITY helping homeless people in Huddersfield is calling on volunteers to take part in its annual charity sleep-out.

Simon on the Streets will be hosting the sleep-out on September 13. Its target is to get 100 people to sign up to take part – and raise £20,000.

The charity provides one-to-one support for homeless people in Huddersfield, Leeds and Bradford.

Director Clive Sandle said: “Last year’s sleep-out was an eye opener for many of our supporters and really helped people understand first-hand what living on the streets is like.

“Fortunately the weather was mild so we didn’t scare off any supporters and we are hoping to see them again this year along with their friends and colleagues.”

Nearly 100 people took part in the sleep-out last year. This year Simon on the Streets is challenging people to raise £200, take part in a homeless tour of Leeds and learn how to build their own bed using only a cardboard box before spending the night sleeping rough to experience homeless life.

Simon on the Streets has held a number of fundraising events this year, including a Three Peaks Challenge in April. The activities have raised just over £7,000.

The sponsored sleep-out will take place at 10pm on Thursday, September 13. People can take part as individuals or as corporate teams.
