SIXTIES singing sensation Helen Shapiro is coming to Huddersfield to deliver a Bible message.

The superstar will be appearing at Holy Trinity Church this month as part of a gospel outreach tour.

The singer shot to fame in 1961 – when she was just 14 – with hits including Don’t Treat Me Like A Child, You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness.

Her songs gave her international stardom and she even had the Beatles as a supporting act.

In 1987, she became a committed Christian and began performing gospel concerts coinciding with the launch of her gospel albums including Pearl and later Kadosh.

She now performs her work in special outreach sessions around the globe, incorporating music with her life story.

She will be appearing at the church, off Trinity Street, on October 18 at 7.30pm.

Church warden Terry Brewis was hoping people would turn out to hear her extraordinary story.

He said: “Part of the mission of our church is outreach work.

“By asking Helen to come along, we hope a lot of people will hear the gospel and how it can benefit them.”

Helen was raised in a traditional Jewish family in the heart of a large East End Jewish community.

At 14 – when she was still at school – she was launched into showbusiness with her first hit record and enjoyed travelling the world and singing at many different venues.

She officially quit showbusiness in 2002 after 42 years of touring.

She now devotes herself to gospel outreach tours.
