A NEW £150,000 skateboard park will be built in Cleckheaton.

The park will be built at Princess Mary Playing Fields, next to Spenborough Swimming Pool.

Skateboarders have run a long-term campaign to have the ramps and half-pipes set up.

A total of £50,000 of Kirklees Council money approved for the scheme will be boosted by grant aid. Skateboarders will help raise the remaining cash.

Seven other sites were on the short-list before being rejected by the council's Cabinet.

John Fletcher, assistant head of leisure at Kirklees Council, said youngsters living near the seven sites would be understandably disappointed.

They included Raikes Lane at Birstall, Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury and two sites in Heckmondwike.

Mr Fletcher said smaller facilities could be set up.

"Although the council is limited to the provision of one major facility in North Kirklees, it may be possible to help groups develop their own areas, albeit on a smaller scale," he added.
