SIX candidates will contest a by-election after a Kirklees councillor quit Labour.

Tim Crowther, a councillor in Heckmondwike for six years, is standing as an independent after his decision to drop the Labour tag.

A member of the far-Right British National Party is among the hopefuls standing in the August 14 poll.

The candidates are: Tabasum Aslam (Lib Dem), Tim Crowther (Ind), David Exley (BNP), Roger Roberts (Con), Florence Smith (Lab) and Heidi Smithson (Green).

Polling stations will be open from 8am to 9pm.

The closing date for postal and proxy applications to be received by the Elections Office in Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, is 5pm on Wednesday, August 6.
