STAFF at a Netherton farm shop put on a sizzling show to win top honours at a major food competition.

A pork, cheddar and chives sausage made by Hinchliffe's Farm Shop was judged champion sausage at the British Pig Executive's regional roadshow.

The farm also won the categories for best speciality sausage and best home-cured bacon at the event staged at York Racecourse.

It came away from the day clutching a total of eight gold medals for its products.

Almost 130 exhibitors took part in the roadshow, which is a new initiative organised by the UK meat industry to highlight the talents of people in the butchery trade.

The champion sausage title means Hinchliffe's Farm Shop will compete in the Champion of Champions contest next February in London.

Simon Haigh, of Hinchliffe's Farm Shop, said: "It was rather appropriate that we did so well - during National Sausage Week!

"It has been a team effort and reflects what our staff are doing 52 weeks of the year."

Mr Haigh said the farm shop was gearing up for Bonfire Night, saying: "We expect to sell up to 10,000 sausages and pies next week."

After that, the farm shop will put their sausages and pies to the test again when staff compete in the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Championships at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford .
