A FORMER Moulin Rouge dancer, who fought her way back from cancer is bringing classes to Huddersfield.
Lesley Kay Smith, from Skelmanthorpe, spent more than 20 years as a dancer, choreographer and producer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, for West End shows in London and Andrew Lloyd Webber productions aboard cruise ships.
Sadly, she was forced to give up her glittering career after being struck down with breast cancer three years ago.
But Lesley has now drawn on the process of rehabilitation – and all her dance experience – to start a Dance Meditation business, which includes organising a series of classes in Huddersfield.
A special introductory session is being held today, December 1, at The Base Studios, New Street, Huddersfield, from 3pm to 6pm.
Lesley said: “I used meditation as part of my rehabilitation from cancer and very soon recognised the massive psychological and physical benefits from regular practice.
“After recovering from cancer I was searching around to find something which would stimulate my brain again but keep me active as well and it seemed only natural to combine my love of dance with meditation.”
A mutual friend introduced Lesley to a meditation teacher and the pair set up High Spirits International in October, offering Dance Meditation and Pure Meditation workshops, taster sessions and classes at The Base Studios.
Lesley said: “These classes are deeply healing and inspiring.
“We started in October and our students so far have ranged from 19 to 74 and all love the experience.
“The classes are different from anything else being offered anywhere else at the moment as they are based on age-old Eastern wisdom and the combination of dance and meditation is unique.
“Students get to tone their body and then calm their mind, de-stress and relax, all in one session.”
And her style of dancing is proving popular, as she explained: “We are very excited because some schools in Kirklees have now been in touch as they are interested in offering their staff taster sessions.
“We really do believe that doing these classes can help people of all ages and abilities to de-stress, unwind and understand their bodies much better.”
New beginners and advanced courses are being offered at The Base Studios on Wednesday nights from January 9.
A special dance meditation showcase is being held at the studios today, December 1, from 3pm to 6pm. Visit www.highspiritsinternational.com for more details.
