They told his family to expect the worst.

But a builder has made a “miracle” recovery just three months after a horror smash which almost claimed his life.

Kyle Wood, 26, of Slaithwaite, suffered massive head injuries when his car crashed into a field and overturned.

Kyle had brain surgery, but family and friends were warned he was unlikely to survive.

The keen snooker and pool player spent three weeks in a coma at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI).

But he confounded doctors by fighting back to health.

He is now back home with gran Betty Wood, 78, and ready for the next stage in his recovery.

“I am getting there,” said Kyle. “I’ll just have to bide my time.”

Kyle was injured when his Ford Mondeo crashed in Holt Head Road, Slaithwaite, in June.

His passenger Steven Berry, also 26, escaped with cuts and bruises.

Kyle’s grateful friends have organised a fundraising night with former world snooker champion Dennis Taylor, in aid of the neurological intensive care unit at the LGI.

The event, on Saturday October 12 at Moldgreen Conservative Club, was expected to go ahead without Kyle.

But now, given the speed of his recovery, Kyle hopes to play the last of five exhibition frames with Taylor.

Kyle, who played snooker for Slaithwaite Con and pool for Lockwood Con, said he was really looking forward to returning to the baize.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “I haven’t got back playing yet, but I hope to get some practice in.

“If not it’ll be a good first game back.

“When my mates told me what they had organised, and that I’d got a frame as well, I was shocked.”

Kyle has no memory of the accident and the first thing he remembers is waking up in hospital.

Gran Betty, who travelled to Leeds every day to see him, said the last three months had been “very rough”.

She added: “We thought we had lost him.

“The doctors think it’s marvellous. Even the surgeon didn’t expect him to pull through. He’s a tough lad.”

Kyle, who also suffered two broken bones in his neck and a broken collarbone, now faces another operation next month to have a titanium plate inserted into his skull.

The evening with Dennis Taylor starts at 7.30pm and tickets at £20 are available from the club or Kev Ellis on 07879 425128.
