A carpet fitter who left a family out-of-pocket and with bare floors has apologised and promised them their money back “by the end of the week.”

Stefan Fields paid £640 up front to Gary Connor, of Allfloors Huddersfield Ltd, which had a showroom at Britannia Mills in Slaithwaite.

But a month later, the Fields family are still staring at bare floors in their living and utility rooms – and the showroom has shut.

Despite numerous calls and visits the Fields are still £640 down.

Stefan, of Slaithwaite, said: “I wanted to keep some business in our local community.

“We’ve got absolutely nothing and zero money back.

“I feel powerless to do anything but I will be taking it to court. I’m absolutely fuming about it.”

Mr Connor, the former director of two defunct flooring companies, has promised to refund customers or complete outstanding work “by the end of the week.”

The former owner of O’Connor's Bar in St George’s Square, Huddersfield, Mr Connor has blamed “bad luck” and “bad trading times” for closing down Allfloors.

The showroom at Britannia Mills has a sign on the door telling customers to call Mr Connor’s mobile number.

Records show Mr Connor and companies he ran have at least eight county court judgements against them for almost £19,000 of unpaid debts dating back to between 2009 and March 2014.

This includes an unpaid debt of £3,806 owed by Allfloors Huddersfield Ltd.

Mr Connor, 57, who declared himself insolvent two years ago, said: “I’m in the process of refunding all customers.

“We’ve had some bad luck and hit some bad trading times. It’s to do with the housing recession.

“The way the business has gone has been a total disaster.

“I apologise 100% to Mr Fields. He can have his money back by the end of the week.”

Asked if he would be starting another company, Mr Connor replied: “I’m not running anything after this. I’ll have to get a job like anyone else.”

Mr Connor added: “There won’t be anyone who hasn’t been refunded by the weekend.”
