A MAN is lucky to be alive today after a chip pan fire.

And he only woke up when firefighters arrived.

The man, in his late 20s, and a friend had been out drinking before returning to the first-floor flat at Cornrace View off King’s Mill Lane, Aspley, early this morning.

The friend is thought to have put the chip pan on and then left the flat. The other man was sleeping in the living room.

The fire took hold in the pan and filled the kitchen with smoke.

Luckily the door was closed and so most of the smoke did not get to the sleeping man.

The alarm went off and was heard by a passer-by, who dialled 999.

Fire crews had to wake the man.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “This shows once again the dangers of drinking and then using a chip pan.”
