That was the message today from people planning a big weekend event in Huddersfield.

They are forsaking the "mad rush" format to hold a Slow Movement at Beaumont Park.

The park's annual Gala Day on Sunday will be a relaxed, easy-going, laid-back celebration.

In an era of high-tech wizardry and a frenetic pace of life, the gala - run by the Friends of Beaumont Park group - will deliberately shun electronic entertainment for classic fairground fun.

The organisers have lined up brass band music, a tombola, small exhibitions and, of course, afternoon teas.

All this is in a bid to allow people to slow down and find breathing space in the glorious 120-year-old park, covering 29 acres between Lockwood and Netherton.

Andrew Kitchen, the community liaison officer with the Friends of Beaumont Park, said: "A `breathing space' health campaign will be launched soon, to encourage even more people to use the park.

"But the gala will hopefully introduce this stunning park to new people from both near and far, as well as entertain all the regulars who yearly attend this event and frequently enjoy the park.

"Hopefully, people will slowly meander throughout the grounds, enjoy the stunning Holme Valley views, have fun at the gala and spend a bit of cash - which will go towards improving and restoring the park".

The gala is backed by a range of community and regional organisations and enterprises.

They range from the Crosland Moor Community Shop to the United Nations children's organisation Unicef, Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton and the Fitness First gym.

Beaumont Park's newly established "theatre in the park" team will be providing live entertainment (and seeking new members) and Marsden Band will take to the bandstand.

The park's photography training course will exhibit work and a flower arranging competition will be judged by the public.

The gala runs from 1.30pm to 5pm.
