INTELLIGENT traffic lights will be switched on next week in a bid to ease congestion problems on a Huddersfield road.

Bus detectors have been fitted on replacement traffic lights at the Fartown Bar junction of Bradford Road to give buses priority.

It forms part of a road scheme between Huddersfield ring road and Fartown Bar which has cost £1.4m.

The hi-tech appr- oach will be brought in from next Monday.

Other changes include new bus lane markings on the two-lane stretch of the road, near the Halfords store.

There are new bus shelters with improved lighting and raised kerbs to make it easier for people to get on and off the bus.

Kirklees Council Cabinet member Clr Ann Denham said: "I am pleased to see the bus lanes at Bradford Road which, with other improvements, will make bus journeys safer, quicker and more comfortable."
