A SNOOKER tournament raised over £1,000 for two good causes.

Sixteen players competed in the inaugural Roger Berry Memorial Trophy at Kirkheaton Liberal Club.

The cash was split equally between Kirkwood Hospice and Macmillan cancer nurses.

Mr Berry, who played in local snooker leagues for 30 years, died from the disease. At the club he played alongside his son, Paul.

Ashley Almond outgunned tournament favourite Robert Read to win the trophy and £100 first prize.

Club members Adrian O'Connor and Chris Yull pulled together the top names in town for the trophy.

It was contested by eight of the best snooker players and eight members of the Kirkheaton club.

Paul Berry supported the tournament, along with his mother, Marilyn.

Main sponsors were Victoria Bathrooms at Horbury and Roger Berry's brother-in-law, Pat Baker, plus the Kingsgate Centre and Keith Crank.
