THE expected heavy snow was likely to hit Huddersfield late this afternoon and into the evening.

Salendine Nook weather expert Paul Stevens said the cold front had been moving very slowly from the south west and from Ireland but would bring substantial falls.

He said by tomorrow, there could be as much as 10cm on hills around the town, with as much as 5cm of snow in the town centre.

Gritting crews from Kirklees Council have been out on all priority roads this afternoon.

And there will remain on standby ovvrnight as temperatures remain below freezing.
