COMMUTERS in Huddersfield faced a blizzard this morning.

The snow began falling in earnest shortly after 8am this morning.

Traffic slowed to a crawl on some main routes into Huddersfield, particularly on high ground.

Terry Walker, Kirklees Highways senior engineer, said they had been expecting between 4cm to 6cm of snow today on ground over 200m.

"We gritted last night, this morning and have carried on gritting today."

An AA Roadwatch spokesman warned drivers to take care.

He said: "Although there are no roads blocked with snow at the moment, the situation could change easily. There is a danger particularly on higher, exposed roads."
