Snow created a flurry of excitement for children and a headache for motorists when blizzard conditions set in during the evening rush hour last night.

But fortunately it passed without causing any serious problems.

The Highways Agency reported hazardous driving conditions on M62 between J24, A629 (Ainley Top) and J27, M621 (Gildersome), because of the snow at around 6pm.

Examiner weatherman Paul Stevens said: “The heavy snow came right as predicted. Visibility was reduced to 300m with winds gusting 30mph. It created around 1cm of snow and almost blizzard-type conditions in Huddersfield.”

Motorist Susan Hampshire spent an hour and a half driving from Bradley to Meltham.

“I set off from Bradley and it was sleeting,” she said. “As I got into Huddersfield it was getting worse.

“It wasn’t that deep but cars were slowing down as the roads were icy. As I got into Meltham cars were queuing all the way down Slaithwaite Road into the village.

“I ended up going on a more rural route but fortunately a four wheel drive or a tractor had made good tread marks so I just stayed in line with those. Cars were struggling but I didn’t see anyone stuck.”

And passengers on the trains faced delays after a car crashed into a bridge at Penistone causing disruption on the line between Barnsley and Huddersfield.
