COUNCILLORS decided to restrict some housing to people over 60.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet voted yesterday to designate some social housing as only for older people.

The move comes after complaints from some tenants and councillors that some young people are involved in anti-social behaviour.

Cabinet member for neighbourhood services Clr Liz Smaje said: “Age designations will be looked at on a local basis and there will be an annual review. Any changes will be done sensitively and there’s no expectation that any existing tenant will be asked to move because of an age designation.”

Clr Smaje added that the change would not affect people living in sheltered housing.

People aged 17 to 35 make up 20% of Kirklees Council tenants, compared with nearly 50% who are over 55.
