SOCIAL workers have been suspended after a critical report.

Calderdale Council announced yesterday it would overhaul its social care after the independent consultants’ study.

The report found that 30 vulnerable children had not been assigned a social worker, while assessments were carried out by staff who had never met the child in question.

The consultants also found some social workers had “inexplicably” failed to contact police before assessing the risk parents posed to their children.

Calderdale director of children and young people’s services Janet Donaldson admitted yesterday there was a problem.

She said: “The state of affairs which the report uncovered is unacceptable and I want to reassure the people of Calderdale that we will take all necessary action to make sure that we will provide the high quality services our children deserve.

“The practice of some members of staff is of concern and, as a result, people have been suspended.”

Calderdale Cabinet member for children’s services Clr Craig Whittaker is also concerned about the report.

The Rastrick Conservative said: “There can be no excuses for poor performance, particularly where the safety and welfare of vulnerable children is concerned.”
