THE son of a much loved Chief Superintendent is undertaking a mammoth cycle in memory of his father.

Simon Alderson, 45, of Holmfirth, is to cycle along the Nile in November to raise funds for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.

His father, career police officer Jack Alderson died in December, and was an avid cycling fan. After his military career with the Royal Engineers, Simon became a cycling photographer, working for a US website and covering top European events.

He has organised a fundraising ball which will take place on March 26 at the Cedar Court Hotel, Huddersfield.

With music provided by the Sonic Pigs, the Banish the Winter Blues ball will include dinner, a raffle and auction, dancing and a late bar as well as a close up magician and roulette.

The epic five day ride in Egypt will follow the Nile on its west bank towards Aswan and then the east side to Luxor. The participants will meet up with a boat which will provide accommodation.

Simon said: “My dad loved watching cycling on the TV, it was one of his favourite spectator sports.

It coincides not only with my job but the chance to do something to fight cancer. It was brain cancer and there were just five days between diagnosis and him dying, it was so quick, but the staff at the Yorkshire Cancer Centre were so good, I wanted to give something back.”
