A QUACKING good time was had by thousands of people at the 27th annual Holmfirth Duck Race yesterday.

A dry afternoon ensured a healthy turnout for the event where villagers race plastic ducks down the River Holme.

It is expected the event, organised by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table, will raise more than £15,000 to be split between the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and local good causes.

BBC Songs of Praise pulled in the crowds at Victoria Park where a service with Hepworth Brass Band was filmed for broadcast on TV on Sunday, August 29.

Villagers gathered at Victoria Bridge for the launch by Huddersfield Town ambassador Andy Booth and Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes.

Entertainment, at Sands Recreation Ground included performances by Hade Edge Senior Brass Band, five-a-side football, rides and stalls.

Huddersfield Pendragon chairman Jonathan Turton said: “Apart from 30 minutes of showers it’s been superb. Any publicity is good and if the BBC drew extra people that’s good.

“It compares well to previous duck races. We had more stalls than ever.”

The winning duck number was 3032.
