HUDDERSFIELD Technical College sympathises with students affected by Government cash cuts.

The college says that while it has not officially sponsored protests by non- English speakers it understands the reasons behind their actions.

Last Wednesday members of English for Speakers of Other Languages (Esol) courses at the Tech demonstrated on the town centre Piazza about cuts to free courses.

The event took place as part of the national Esol campaign organised by the University and College Union.

Geoff Higgs, one of the college’s vice-principals, said: “The demonstration was not officially sponsored by the college and learners with classes attended them as usual.

“However we do sympathise and understand the reasons behind the action.

“The college still provides Esol classes, but due to changes in Government policy we can no longer offer them for free.

“While this college has been given extra money to help Esol learners in cash difficulties we have to negotiate a very complicated minefield of benefits and entitlements in determining the costs for each individual learner.”
