SHHH! Council officials in Huddersfield are targeting the noise nuisances.

Two local events have been organised by Kirklees Environmental Services to celebrate national Noise Action Day on Thursday, May 27.

They are designed to help curb a growing problem in the area.

Noise causes disruption and distress to everyone, whether at home, work or study. And a Kirklees Council spokesman said: "Our capacity to make noise is increasing. Our lifestyle now incorporates amplified music, home DIY with more powerful power tools, and outdoor activities including parties and barbecues.

"At the same time, we have a high expectation of quietness.

"Environmental Services receive more than 1,500 noise complaints each year and the number is increasing."

The `noise days' will be at Dewsbury Market on Wednesday, May 26, 10am until 3pm and at Huddersfield Outdoor Market on Thursday, May 27, 10am until 3pm.

Both will feature fun-filled activities as well as advice on how to avoid annoying your neighbours and practical advice on how to deal with noise problems.

There will be quizzes and colouring-in activities for younger children. Prizes will be handed out on the day.

Kirklees Environmental Services will have experienced staff on hand.

A dog warden - also from Environmental Services - will provide advice on noisy dogs.
