A MAN has appeared in court for the second time in a week for theft.

Sammy Askew, of Lonsbrough Flats in Southgate, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted stealing beer from the town centre branch of Tesco.

His appearance came just days after he pleaded guilty to stealing bakery goods from the same store.

Magistrates heard that the new matter of theft took place at midnight on December 15.

Askew, 36, was witnessed by a store detective entering the Viaduct Street supermarket.

He selected the four pack of beer and walked out of the store without paying.

The alcohol was not recovered.

In interview Askew initially claimed that he was in bed with his girlfriend before admitting the offence.

He has only just started a community order, which was made by the court on February 25.

Then Askew admitted taking a tray of food he found in the store’s compound.

Police found him munching on a stolen sausage roll when they arrived at his home.

Magistrates allowed the community order to continue. They gave Askew a conditional discharge for six months.
