PEOPLE have been urged to keep their doors and windows shut after a spate of burglaries in Newsome.

Police believe the intruders have been targeting the elderly.

The warning was given after an 80- year-old woman confronted a burglar inside her home at Barcroft Road at 11.50am on Wednesday.

She had left the door slightly open for her cat, but the intruder sneaked in and she found him searching through drawers in a downstairs bedroom. He fled through the door and escaped over gardens.

He is white, aged 16 or 18, 5ft 10in tall and slim with pink cheeks.

He wore a navy blue coat with the hood up.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "There have been a spate of sneak-in thefts in the Edale Avenue, Blagden Lane and Falcon Street areas of Newsome recently where the intruders have got in through open windows and doors."
