FIREFIGHTERS needed a specialist engine to tackle a blaze in Huddersfield.

Arsonists started the fire upstairs at a mid-terraced cottage on Fannymoor Lane, Longley, and flames spread to the roof.

The fire was spotted at 3am today and an aerial platform was needed to pour water on the fire from above and douse the flames.

Crew Manager Edward Beaumont, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "The house was well alight when we arrived. The fire may have been burning for some time.

"It had started upstairs and then spread to the roof and loft.

"If children are responsible for this they are putting themselves in danger.

"They could have become trapped as the fire took hold."
