COUNCIL tenants are being urged to go to an open day about home improvements.

Work on bringing homes in Meltham up to the Government's "decent standard" is due to begin on September 20.

Many tenants have already chosen their new kitchens and designed the layout.

The open day is at the new sports centre in Mean Lane, Meltham, on Wednesday, September 15, from 1pm until 8pm.

Almost 6,000 council homes in Kirklees have been improved so far under the programme.

A council spokes- woman said: "Most tenants have been delighted with the improvements to their homes. Many praised the standard of work and helpfulness of the workmen."

The latest project to near completion is on the Bradley estate in Huddersfield.

Nearly 600 properties have benefited from improvements which include new kitchens and bathrooms, new outside doors, central heating and double glazing.

Work on a further 730 homes is due to begin in January in Cowlersley, Milnsbridge, Golcar, Botham Hall and Longwood.
