CHURCHES in Birstall and Batley are to be renovated, thanks to cash from environmental fund Biffaward.

Grade II listed St Peter's Church at Birstall will get £88,417 and Batley Cemetery's Twin Chapels will get £81,985.

At St Peter's, £8,841 was given by the parochial church council and the rest has come from Biffaward.

Biffaward is managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and is paid for by landfill tax credits given by Biffa Waste Services.

Landfill site operators like Biffa are allowed to give up to 6.8% of the tax they should pay to environmental projects, in return for a 90% tax credit.

The cash will be spent on renovating St Peter's roof and exterior, installing a gas-fired boiler and providing disabled access.

Parts of the church date back to the 11th century and the 16th century. But the main body of the church was built in 1863.

The building was in desperate need of restoration to make it safe for community use.

The Rev Paul Knight, Vicar of St Peter's, said: "We had been struggling to raise money and find grants.

"The Biffaward grant has ensure the preservation and continued use of this historic building," he added.

The Twin Chapels have benefited from £500,000 in Biff- award cash over the past five years.

This has allowed Batley conservation group Environment Concern to secure money totalling around £3m to turn the chapels into a high-tech local heritage information centre and community college.

The new Biffaward cash will pay for better lighting on access routes to the chapels.

It will also allow Victorian steps leading to the chapels to be restored.
