MEMBERS of Huddersfield's Polish community attended a special mass to commemorate the first anniversary of Pope John Paul II's death.

The Polish Catholic Church in Fitzwilliam Street was packed to overflowing with people wanting to remember the life of John Paul II, who came from Poland.

The turnout echoed the large crowds who paid their last respects to the pontiff, who died aged 84.

Flowers and candles adorned the altar area, where a picture of the Pope was placed.
