A SPORTS and community centre for the people of Dalton, Rawthorpe and Moldgreen opened at the weekend.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Mary Harkin, cut the tape to mark the Dram Sports and Community Centre and to welcome people to it.

The centre, off Ridgeway, aims to form a vital part of regeneration in the area under the Dalton, Rawthorpe, Moldgreen Regeneration Programme (Dram).

Outdoor facilities include junior and senior rugby and football pitches, together with a games area for basketball, netball, five-a-side football, wheelchair sports and other activities.

There is also a fitness suite and six changing rooms, as well as several multi-use rooms for creches and toddler groups, adult education family celebrations and social activities.

Among those at the opening were Jill Sykes, Dram centre project leader, Cheris Peltier, Dram regeneration programme manager, Clr John Smithson, deputy leader of Kirklees Council, and representatives of Huddersfield Pride.

Ms Sykes said: "We are witnessing the conclusion of a challenging project.

"This weekend offers the opportunity for all local residents to see the facilities on offer and accessible to all."

All residents at the opening were eligible for three months free membership.

The opening coincided with the 10th anniversary of Sport England.

Andrew Fawkes, of Sport England, said: "It demonstrates the use of cash to support long-term, community benefits."
