SOME coach travellers will soon be able to reply to the question "Is that seat taken?" with the answer: "Yes, by me."

National Express, the UK's biggest coach company, is to introduce a special ticket for single travellers that guarantees an empty seat next to them.

The ticket, which could be available by summer, is likely to cost about 20-25% more than an ordinary single fare.

Joy Williams, of National Express, said: "We have found that a lot of our customers would like the extra space and would prefer not to sit next to someone they don't know.

"We're hoping that this new ticket will tempt people out of their cars. We feel sure it will be particularly popular with women travellers.

"We haven't quite worked out just when we can introduce this yet or just how much we will charge."
