CHILDREN with special needs were introduced to the joys of sport at a basketball skills competition.

About 40 youngsters took part in the event at Lydgate School, New Mill, as part of the School Sport Partnership programme in Kirklees.

The Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils, aged 13 to 15, took part in activities with a basketball theme.

It was a joint venture between the Newsome and Pennine school sport partnerships.

Children from Newsome High School and Sports College joined their counterparts from four Kirklees special schools - Lydgate, Longley, Highfields and Turnshaws at Kirkburton - to learn the skills needed to play the sport.

The youngsters, who have various disabilities, were led by Lydgate teacher Val Tipling and Carol Thompson, the school sport co-ordinator for special schools in the Newsome partnership.

Linda Stacey, partnership development manager for the Newsome group, said: "It was a fantastic experience for these children to get together and compete in sport.

"Everybody enjoyed the competition.

"It was a great success and we anticipate there will be many similar events."

The session at Lydgate School was just one of the numerous activities organised by the School Sport Partnership programme, which as one of its aims gets more children involved in sport.
