AN Asian MEP condemned the `politics of fear' at a public meeting held in Thornton Lodge.

Sajj Karim who represents the North West for the Liberal Democrats, was warmly received when he attacked Tony Blair's Labour Government for its attack on civil liberties and for its support of US president George Bush's Iraq war.

He told the audience at the Thornton Lodge Community Centre that both Labour and Conservatives wanted to frigh- ten voters - and especially Asian voters - by raising the spectre of terrorism and immigration.

They must be resisted, he told the meeting.

At the same meeting Elisabeth Wilson, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Colne Valley, spoke about the positive messages which the Liberal Democrats were presenting.

In particular she said the needs of the NHS were not just about increased resources.

There was also a need for less red tape - allowing doctors and nurses to put patients first rather than the culture of targets.

Liberal Democrats also wanted to see the end of unfair charges for eye and dental checks and a quicker diagnosis of serious illnesses.
