A COUNCILLOR has welcomed plans to install speed bumps on a busy road used as a rat run.

Two ‘speed plateaux’ – humps that span the entire carriageway with ramps either side and a flat surface on top – are earmarked for Cross Lane in Primrose Hill.

They will be situated at the junctions of Elizabeth Street and Lawton Street. Those streets will become 20mph zones.

Newsome ward councillor Andrew Cooper, for the Green Party, said: “I’m pleased it’s happening.

“It has been an issue for a long time. Residents of Cross Lane have long been concerned about traffic speeds down there.

“It’s a long, straight stretch of road and the thing we have to put ahead of the rights of traffic is the safety of children.”

Clr Cooper said it was only a change in policy that had allowed traffic calming to be proposed.

“One of the things that has prevented something being done before was the council’s policy of not doing work to prevent accidents, but reacting after accidents occurred,” he said.

“There’s now a small budget set aside for measures to prevent accidents.”

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: “Traffic speeds on Cross Lane have been causing concern and, as a result, a speed plateau at the entrance of Lawton Street and one at the entrance of Elizabeth Street are being proposed in order to slow traffic down as it enters the estate from Cross Lane. The estate will be a 20mph zone as part of the new Home Zone scheme.”

Any objections to the plan must be submitted to Kirklees Council’s legal services department by April 1.
