Arsonists placed a tyre on a speed camera close to a notorious accident blackspot near Honley and set it on fire.

Fire crews were called out just after midnight on Friday morning to deal with the incident.

The tyre had been placed over the top of the camera on Woodhead Road, opposite the Texaco garage, before being set alight.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the blaze.

They said the incident had caused some damage to the inside of the camera.

The area has seen a number of serious accidents in recent years.

The latest incident happened just last week, when a driver had an amazing escape.

The car on its side after the accident near Honley

A vehicle ended up on its side after the accident on Woodhead Road between the notorious Alpine Corner bend at Honley and Berry Brow.

But amazingly there were no serious injuries.

Residents and local councillors welcomed the introduction of the speed cameras in recent years.

They were part of a number of safety measures in the area, including warning signs, regulatory road markings, traffic islands, and lower speed limits.
