A FATHER who was caught speeding said he was rushing home to tend to his ill son.

John Batley, of Daw Royds in Almondbury, admitted driving at 40mph in a 30mph zone on Jackroyd Lane in Newsome on February 15.

At his sentencing hearing at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Batley, 29, said his fiancee called him because his 15-month-old son had been running a high temperature.

“I just needed to get back home to get his temperature down and take him to hospital,” he said. When police stopped him, he accepted he had been speeding.

Batley appealed to magistrates not to impose the automatic three-point penalty on his licence. But they rejected the argument that it was a genuine medical emergency that required him to speed.

Chairman of the bench Eddie Jefferson said his fiancee could have driven her son to hospital or called 999. Batley was given three points and fined £60, with £100 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
