A man convicted of a speeding offence claimed he knew nothing about his court case.

Mohammed Rashid, of Caledonian Road in Dewsbury, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that on March 21 he was convicted in his absence of speeding and failing to give his details to police.

Magistrates heard that the incident happened on the M1 Northbound at Wakefield when Rashid drove at 68mph, exceeding the 50mph speed limit.

The 54-year-old was ordered to pay £811 and 6 penalty points were added to his licence.

Magistrates set aside Rashid’s original conviction but warned him that the proceedings against him may be started again.
