A NURSERY school has been awarded a catering award just three months after opening its kitchen and appointing a cook.

Denby Dale Nursery School in Wakefield Road has received a Kirklees Healthy Choice Gold award.

The award recognises a school offering healthy food options on the menu and good standards of hygiene and food preparation.

Previously, the nursery's pupils brought sandwiches as many were part-time and the school had no kitchen.

But a kitchen opened in September and head chef Julie Knowles - seen with some of the children - and her team were appointed to provide meals.

Head teacher Penny Khan said: "We felt it was important to offer the children a hot meal in the middle of the day.

"All our produce is locally sourced, from the local butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer and credit for the award goes to Julie."

The kitchen tries to serve up children's "five a day" portions of fruit and veg.
