A SPORTS club with a difference is celebrating a lottery grant.
Spen Valley Flyers, a roller hockey club, have scooped £10,000 from Sport England. And it means they will be able to open up their sport to people all over Kirklees.
The club will be holding 10 “Come and Try” sessions at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre starting next month.
The sessions are intended to attract more young people to the club and to provide opportunities to represent the club in competition – ahead of the 2009/10 season.
The new sporting opportunities have been made possible by a £10,000 grant from Sport England – which is working with local communities to get people playing more sport.
The Flyers also had help from Kirklees Active Leisure, Kirklees Council, the Northern Counties Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) and The National Roller Hockey Association (NRHA).
Dan Messenger, the club’s coaching co-ordinator, said: “Spen Valley Flyers Roller Hockey Club is a new club and we are always looking to attract more members of all ages, from five years upwards.
“Our project is opening up our club to give the people of Kirklees the opportunity to learn more about the sport of roller hockey and to play competitively, potentially against clubs from all over the North of England.
“We’re delighted to have received Lottery Funding to make it all happen”.
David Gent, Sport England’s Yorkshire representative, said: “The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug.
“The come and try sessions are a great way for people of all ages to try roller hockey and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved”.
The dates of the come and try sessions will be released in two weeks time.
Roller Hockey is a fast non-contact ball game invented in England in 1896. The game is played on roller skates between two teams of no more than 10 players per team, consisting of eight outfield players and a minimum of two goalkeepers.
A team must not have more than five players on the rink including the goalkeeper at any time during the game
