HOLMFIRTH’S swimming pool will shut for almost five months when it is given a £1m makeover.

Visitors to the pool have until October 29 to get their swimming and lessons booked before it becomes closed to the public for around 19 weeks.

Work will begin on a major upgrade of its facilities.

It is hoped the new-look pool will reopen in March 2008, sporting newly refurbished changing rooms along with a new unisex disabled and family changing room.

Mark Dunstan, regional manager for Kirklees Active Leisure, said: “We are extremely excited about this project which will mean so much for the people of Holmfirth and beyond.

“The building is 30 years old and is really in need for an upgrade.

“We hope our regulars can put up with the inconvenience of the building being shut for a short time, but are sure that the fantastic results will be well worth it.”

The pool itself will also be revamped and the front of the building will be extended to include an improved reception area and a private consultation room for customers on the GP referral scheme PALS.

The £1m project is being funded from Kirklees Council’s capital monies.

Clr Liz Smaje, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Neighbourhood Services, said: “It’s important that we invest in our sports and leisure facilities as the current concerns about the health of the nation indicate.

“I just hope the new and improved pool will encourage even more people in the area to take up swimming.”

In the meantime, swimming lessons will be transferred to nearby pools. Wednesday lessons will take place at Scissett Baths at Wakefield Road and all other junior lessons will be at the Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite.

Parents are advised to check with the pools for times of the lessons.
