Tots made a splash at a get-active session aimed at giving them a healthy start in life.

Up to 100 under fives turned into mini sporting champs when they took part in dozens of free activities at the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre.

The Under 5s Open Day included ‘Ducklings’ swimming lessons, music and movement and football. Over six hours youngsters and their parents sampled all the fun of the leisure centre.

The soft play reef zone was also explored by youngsters who got to climb and run around safely and bounce around in the ball pool.

It was the first free day of its kind for under fives at the new centre, which opened in May 2015.

There was a serious message behind the fun and aquatics activator Lois Bell, who helped to organise the day, said: “It was great fun and those who came really got involved.

“We want to get kids active as early as possible to decrease the chance of childhood obesity.

“Those who start taking part now will continue to be active throughout their lives.

“During the day we also handed out goodie bags and fresh fruit to the children to encourage this healthy living lifestyle.

“It’s all part of our overall aim to promote fitness for the whole family.”

Lois said the event was likely to be repeated.

“We hope to do it again in the future,” she added. “At the moment the activities are just offered at our leisure centre but other sites may decide to put them on in the future.”
