A TOWN hall committee covering Huddersfield is to be split in two.

The move brought protests from Labour politicians, who said the present set-up was working well.

But their bid to stop the shake-up failed at a meeting of Kirklees Council.

A Huddersfield North committee will cover Lindley, Greenhead and Ashbrow wards. Huddersfield South will comprise Crosland Moor, Newsome, Almondbury and Dalton.

Council deputy leader Clr John Smithson said the committees would be small enough to be able to properly represent their areas' needs.

But Labour leader Clr Mehboob Khan said: "Regeneration has been working well. It's folly to change this structure."

But Tories supported the change, saying it would end infighting.
