A SPORTING trust could be formed in Brighouse.

And those behind it say it could help secure the future of Brighouse Town and give the younger generation more sporting opportunities.

But first a long-running dispute over the running of the Blakeborough Sports and Social Club, which owns the land off St Giles Road, needs to be resolved by the courts.

The club’s ground is owned by crisis-hit Blakeborough’s Social and Sports Club in Brighouse and there are 25 years left to run on the lease to Brighouse Town.

But there is a dispute over who runs the club and two sides of the club’s membership will head to court in May and June when a decision may be made.

Thereafter the future of the site will become clearer.

The possibility remains that the land could be sold off for development.

If it is sold off some members of the club want the funds to go into a sporting trust.

And if sports clubs in the town rally together it could be protected after the conclusion of the court hearing.

MP Craig Whittaker and local councillors are backing the idea of a sporting trust.
