FOR 160 years the Examiner has been at the heart of local affairs.

We have backed campaigns such as the bid to raise £500,000 for a body scanner for Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

We have established annual awards to honour local community heroes and businesses.

We have rewarded people who put their heart and soul into their beautiful gardens and entertained readers with literary luncheons and met them in their thousands at local galas and shows.

This All Our Yesterdays edition looks specifically at the Examiner’s involvement in rewarding young people for their achievements.

The picture above, for instance, shows Examiner director and news editor Alfred Lee presenting the paper’s Schoolboys’ Rugby League Cup to Charlie Williams, captain of Moldgreen County School’s under 13 team in April 1950.

The Moldgreen team had defeated St Patrick’s School 51-0 in the competition final. It was the first time the trophy had been awarded but many more youngsters have been acknowledged over the years for their achievements in sport and literature.
