PRICES at council sports centres and swimming pools are going up in the new year.
Soaring energy and insurance costs are being blamed for the increases.
From January 1, the majority of prices will go up by 4%.
Kirklees Active Leisure, which manages centres for the council, said the move was unavoidable.
The new prices will stand throughout 2005, officials promised.
Finance manager David Armistead said: "Our organisation is in an industry with high premises operating costs, such as heating up water and circulating it in our nine swimming pools.
"I have calculated the impact of the rate of inflation on our organisation to be 4.4% So this price increase is still below our rate of inflation."
The cost of an adult swim will go up from £2.75 to £2.85 and a junior swim from £1.35 to £1.40.
Peak-time activity classes will rise by 50p to £3.50 while the off-peak cost goes up from £2.20 to £2.50.
