THE £1,000-a-week water features in St George’s Square have been hit by more problems.

Some of the fountains outside Huddersfield Railway Station have been switched off after encountering an air pressure fault.

And that news comes after recent problems for the 14m-long black granite wall fountain at the bottom of the square.

That was also sitting idle, awaiting further maintenance work. The Examiner reported last month how maintenance workers spent two hours cleaning salt deposits off the feature.

The cascading fountain, along with the water jets, were installed as part of the square’s £4m facelift in 2009.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “A fault recently developed in the air pressure system, which has meant that not all of the fountains can currently operate at their full capacity.

“The fountains are subject to a regular maintenance programme so the issue will be resolved by the manufacturers during their next maintenance visit due shortly.”
